Vocabulary of the Week: Family Gatherings
With Thanksgiving around the corner for our friends in the US, here’s some vocabulary to help you talk about family gatherings in Greek:
- Η οικογένεια (i oikogéneia) – the family
- Το τραπέζι (to trapézi) – the table
- Το γεύμα (to gévma) – the meal
- Η γιορτή (i giortí) – the celebration
- Ο συγγενής (o syggenís) – the relative
- Τα φαγητά (ta fagitá) – the food (plural)
- Η ευγνωμοσύνη (i evgnomosýni) – the gratitude

Grammar Tip of the Week: Singular vs. Plural Articles
In Greek, articles change based on gender (masculine, feminine, neuter) and number (singular, plural). Here’s how it works:
Singular Articles

Example: Ο φίλος (o fílos) – The friend (male). -
Η (i) – Feminine
Example: Η φίλη (i fíli) – The friend (female). -
ΤΟ (to) – Neuter
Example: Το παιδί (to pedí) – The child.
Plural Articles
ΟΙ (i) – Masculine and Feminine (same for both genders).
Example: Οι φίλοι (i fíli) – The friends (male or mixed group).
Example: Οι φίλες (i fíles) – The friends (female).
ΤΑ (ta) – Neuter.
