Vocabulary of the Week: Coffee Shop Essentials ☕
Here are some common words you’ll encounter in a Greek café:
- Ο καφές (O kafés) – The coffee
- Η ζάχαρη (I záchari) – The sugar
- Το γάλα (To gála) – The milk
- Το κουλούρι (To koulouri) – The sesame bread ring
- Η τυρόπιτα (I tyropíta) – The cheese pie
- Το νερό (To neró) – The water
- Η απόδειξη (I apódixi) – The receipt
Grammar Tip of the Week: Understanding the Τόνος (Accent) 📝
In Greek, every word with more than one syllable has a τόνος (accent mark) on a vowel to indicate where the stress falls when pronouncing the word.
- Words with one syllable don’t need a τόνος, except in specific cases (e.g., πού = where, ή = or).
- Always place the accent on one vowel in words with two or more syllables.
- Examples:
- Καφές (Kafés) – Coffee
- Σοκολάτα (Sokoláta) – Chocolate
- Τραπέζι (Trapézi) – Table
This small detail is key to sounding natural and confident when speaking Greek!
